    Hi All,

I have personally found that the resident PIWO are much easier to =
find in the Spring and Summer throughout their range. In the north bay =
where I live this species is common, but shy for the most part. During =
their breeding season I have counted up to ten individuals in a day in =
one local state park. But, in the same are this time of year I am lucky =
to hear or see one or two. I have walked on trails with a PIWO 10 feet =
away from me that I have almost missed seeing a few times. This species =
seems to have a knack for not drumming or calling when you approach =
within a 100 yards or so.

      Rusty (& all),

I was going to ask the same question, but you beat me to the punch. =
According to my field guides, Pileated Woodpeckers are resident =
throughout their range. I, personally, have seen them in Joaquin Miller =
    Park in mid-June and mid-October. I think you're correct that, because =
the East Bay population is so small, they are seldom seen.

I know there have been several sightings reported to EBB over the last =
few years. What months have others seen them?

Is there a seasonality to Pileated Woodpeckers around here?

I just assumed there was a tiny population in the East Bay hills =
    that was=20
resident, but seldom detected. Not true?
