Both yellowlegs species at Hayward Shoreline Interpretive
Center

At the Hayward Shoreline Interpretive Center this morning we saw both a Greater Yellowlegs and a Lesser Yellowlegs in the small pond by the center. At times they were within inches of each other. What a great way to note distinguishing field marks.
Unfortunately, we did not have a camera as they would have made an ideal photo.

Male Tufted Duck in Berkeley

Hi all:
This morning at 8 AM I pulled into the newish parking area an eighth-mile north of the Ashby Ave exit from Hwy 80 in Berkeley along the frontage road. In a mixed flock of ducks, including 6 Redheads, Ruddy Ducks, Lesser Scaup, Red-breasted Mergansers, and Bufflehead, there was a male Tufted Duck.
That was fun enough, but just south of this group a harbor seal (could have been a sea lion, but it looked too pale-headed) popped up out of the water wrestling with what looked to be a 15- to 20-pound striped salmon in its mouth. It would shake the salmon, pop under water, come back up with the salmon still gripped tightly in its jaw, shake it some more, etc. At one point the seal swallowed a hunk of salmon along with one of the fins. Very Wild Kingdom-esque except no Marlon Perkins and no sidekick Jim to go into the water and wrestle with the animals.
Good birding,

Biked from home through Alameda down to Coyote Hills and then up Alameda Creek to the Union City BART station for a well deserved ride home on Sunday. Approaching darkness and rain didn't allow for much more than very quick stops for birding but I did have the following highlights:
Lake Merritt, Oakland:
Alameda:
Martin Luther King Jr Regional Shoreline, Oakland:
Hayward Regional Shoreline:
Others:
Anyone interested in doing a fairly strenuous bike ride with some birding thrown in is welcome to join me sometime.

Tom Stienstra's column in today's San Francisco Chronicle sports section says that
With storms in the past month hammering Canada and the Pacific Northwest, the migration of eagles into California for the winter has commenced full force.
He cites Sunol Regional Wilderness, Del Valle Regional Park, Upper San Leandro Reservoir, Lafayette Reservoir, and Briones Reservoir as spots where eagles have been seen.

Barrow's Goldeneyes at Martinez Regional Shoreline

Today, Thursday, at 1 PM there were a dozen Barrow's Goldeneyes well offshore, seen from the trail along Martinez Regional Shoreline, west of the main parking lots. They were past the old barge remains. A scope was necessary.
Besides one Western Grebe, there were exactly zero other birds out on the water.

How is birding at Lake Temescal in Oakland? Any water birds? I've not seen many posts so I'm wondering.

Black-crowned Night-Herons roost at Lake Temescal. Otherwise, I don't think it's very exciting, but people who go more often may see more.
