Today at the lunch hour, 11/2/09, there was a white striped WHITE-THROATED SPARROW in the Quarry parking lot at Coyote Hills. This is a different bird than the tan striped one I saw at the visitor center last week. It was with the mixed crowned sparrow flock very close to the restrooms in the lot. I also saw one PEREGRINE FALCON soaring over the entry road near the entry kiosk.
Early this morning, on my way to work, there was a huge feeding frenzy of fish eating birds in the salt ponds just west of the Dumbarton Bridge Toll Plaza. I could not stop, but there was easily 300 WHITE PELICANS, and over 100 GREAT EGRETS, CORMORANTS, AND GULLS actively diving and feeding in the ponds. The entire perimeter of the levees were lined with hundreds of white birds, while the gulls were flying in a frenzy above them. It looked like one of the scenes in Nature in the Everglades. Easily over 1000 birds. Hopefully I can stop tomorrow if it happens again.
