Late yesterday afternoon we spotted a Merlin at Contra Loma Regional
Park, Antioch. I returned this morning and refound the bird (a
female or juvenile) perched in a nearby tree. I had excellent views
and observed the bird for almost one hour, hoping to see it hunt.
Although it did not leave its perch, I had the opportunity to watch
it preen and study the surrounding grassy area for prey. Even a high-
climbing fox squirrel did not disturb it.

When I returned home and was having lunch, a white-striped White-
throated Sparrow appeared in our backyard. This was a new yard
    species for us.

    Good birding,
