This morning around 8:00AM I found what I think was a Red-napped Sapsucker
along the East Shore Trail. The sun was not into the canyon yet so the light
was not great. I noted a black and white face with large red patch under the
chin, red top of the head and red nap area. I viewed the bird via bin's for
about 5 minutes and decided to head back to the car to get my scope and try
for a digi-scope pic. Naturally after returning to the spot I could not
locate the bird. I spent the next two hours combing the hillside without
success. Red-breasted and Red-napped hybridize so this bird could be a
mixture. Lake del Valle area has many Red-breasted Sapsuckers this time of
year and this bird was clearly not the normal Red-breasted Sapsucker.
The location was approx 200 yards northeast of where the trail from the
concrete bridge intersects the East Shore trail. The bird was quietly
tapping sap wells in the upper limbs of a oak tree.
    Good birding and Happy Thanksgiving.
