This was an exciting first of the season for me --about 8-10 Yellow-rumped
Warblers, drinking from a puddle in the parking lot and flying around in the
trees. Perhaps they had come in response to the storm.
Also exciting to see
1 Black Oystercatcher on the gravel bar on the north side of the creek mouth
2 Black Turnstones, back for the winter, hanging out on the rocky point
2 Black Bellied Plovers on mud flats along trail and at end of rocky
point--back for the winter
Probably 2 American Wigeons at mouth of creek
Lots of the following:
80-90 Willets
maybe 200 gulls
40-50 peeps --probably mostly Least Sandpipers since they were browner and
darker, but some seemed grayer so may have been some Western (have no scope
so could not see them very well)
30-40 starlings
Others water birds in smaller numbers
several Marbled Godwits
2 terns flying in the distance
These birds were in the bushes and trees by the parking lot and along the
path on the bay side.
20-30 Red-winged Blackbirds and an odd bird slightly larger than the
blackbirds --looked similar to a female red wing but had a very light
eyebrow.
2 Black Phoebe
Bewick's wren calling in bushes
8-10 Lesser Goldfinch and 2-4 American Goldfinch
Several House Finches
Several House Wrens
2 other kinds of unidentified birds
This park is just a few minutes off the freeway and you can walk to the
creek mouth and rock point in under 5 minutes so it is very accessible.
Birding was at Bay Front Park in Pinole about 3 hours after high tide in mid
afternoon. It was sunny and warm after the big storm yesterday.
To go to Bay Front Park --

Good birding!
