The Mt. Diablo Audubon field trip to the Winton Avenue side of Hayward
Regional Shoreline Thursday was quite successful, with a total of 65 species
spotted by 14 birders. Two of the total were added after lunch at the San
Leandro Marina Park. Highlights included 6 raptor and 16 shorebird species.
Among them were both Merlin and Peregrine Falcon, Red Knots hiding between
the many Black-bellied Plovers, Red-necked Phalaropes, both Turnstones,
Surfbirds, huge numbers of Marbled Godwits and absolutely killer looks at a
very close Wandering Tattler. Among the others were a Downy Woodpecker
along Mt. Trashmore, a Say's Phoebe, several House Wrens, a Lincoln's
    Sparrow and numerous Yellow Warblers.
