I am forwarding this message for Janet Gawthrop, who is not subscribed
to this list. The bird was seen at the intersection of Monte Vista and
Harrison - not far from the Morcom Rose Garden. Kay Loughman, Berkeley.

    Hi,

I don't know if you have enough time to track oddities, but yesterday
(July 5) I saw a hummingbird across the street from my apartment which
had white sides, and a throat and breast that were mostly white. When I
looked at it through binoculars, I could see faint, tan streaks on the
throat just below the bill, and a few tan streaks on the breast. I got
views of it facing me and in profile as it flew to different branches in
the tree. When I saw it in profile, the top of the head, back, and most
of the wings looked grayish, but it was a foggy day so color was not
easy to distinguish. There was a whitish patch where the wings fold,
but the rest of the wings looked grayish. The bird's eye and bill were
black, and the legs and feet also were a grayish/tannish color, as near
    as I could tell.

The bird was mostly silent, so I could not tell you what species it was.
I saw it chased by one of the resident Anna's hummingbirds, so I don't
know if it will be back. I'll definitely keep you posted if I see it again.

Has anyone else reported a mostly white hummingbird this year?
