    Dear Birders:

It's hard to imagine a more tuneful time at the UC Botanical Gardens in Strawberry Canyon than mid-April. Townsend's and Yellow-rumped Warblers along with Wilson's and Orange-rumped Warblers are all singing. Further down the Canyon, I could hear the bouyant song of a Warbler Vireo. And I heard my first Black-headed Grosbeak in full song -- that rich, contralto voice that can't help but lift the spirits of the most dour amongst us.

By next spring, pile-divers and other unwelcome mechanical noises may replace birdsong as Lawrence Berkeley National Lab begins construction of a new proposed industrial-scale building to be built a few yards from the Garden fence.
