This morning I birded the western half of Sky West golf course in Hayward (located NW of the West A St. & Hesperian Blvd. intersection). I found 4 Rufous Hummingbirds - 1 pr. & 2 other males, one of which was displaying over a row of bushes w/ red berries (toyon?) which leads me to believe there was an unseen female. Four more Selaphorus HB's were also seen, one of which I'm almost certain was a male Allen's. It had a solid green back which continued over most of the rump in a wedge shape & a rufous breast. It was also a bit narrower, not as plump as the Rufous HB's I saw.
There was a female Purple Finch next to hole #1 & a male Western Bluebird by the driving range. I also found an interesting Black Phoebe. It had turned mostly black, including the mantle. The lesser coverts showed no light edging, but the greater coverts still had a noticable brownish edge. The brown edge was darker than juvenile plumage but was still very clear in all lights.
