[EBB Sightings] Golden Eagle at Niles Staging area

GGAS Alameda Creek/Quarry Lakes Bicycle Birding Trip

Fremont, Saturday, November 8, 2008

Eight people joined Blair and me for this cool foggy
morning. With a forecast of rain for the afternoon, we decided to stay close to
the Fremont BART station and investigate the upper portion of the Alameda Creek
Trail and Quarry Lakes.
Coyote Hills will have to be another day. We were astounded at the richness of
birdlife here and saw by our count 60 species. The EBRPD Niles staging area
gave us a Golden Eagle, Red-shafted Flickers, Cedar Waxwings and a Ruby-crowned
Kinglet; Quarry Lakes EBRP had American White Pelicans and one Brown Pelican on
Lago Los Osos adjacent to BART, and Black-crowned Night Herons on Willow
Slough. Most of the other birds, including the Hooded Mergansers and Spotted
Sandpiper, were seen on the creek. Thanks to all the good spotters! We
encountered rain only after riding BART back to Oakland.
