After seeing only one pine siskin a couple of days in a row, the mob
has descended on the feeders on my decks. There are dozens of them
eating thistle, sunflower chips and suet. I have never seen so many
this early in the season so I'm not sure if they are just passing
through or here to stay for the winter. I hate to think of my seed
bill if they decide to stay! Also of note, a hairy woodpecker was
feeding at my sunflower chip tube feeder yesterday. That was a first
for my yard in the Montclair area just below Skyline near Snake Rd.
The golden crowned sparrows have also made an appearance and I have
seen a hermit thrush in the backyard right on schedule. Fun to be a
part of the changing bird seasons.
