Post-breeding dispersal and/or early migration gave us some locally
unusual birds this week. Not fitting the above categories was a Western
Wood-Pewee still sitting on a nest along the Wildcat Canyon Trail, but
we also found our first Hermit Warbler of the season, in the pines just
north of the Nature Center in Tilden. A pair of Western Tanagers was in
pines at the intersection of the Seaview and Big Springs Trails, and
nearby, an adult Male Bullock's Oriole flew over us. At the Berkeley
Marina, we spotted Green Heron, the continuing immature White-tailed
Kite, Heermann's Gulls, and two different juvenile Common Murres. The
Albany mudflats had the over-summering Northern Pintail and a juvenile
Least Tern begging from its parent. Immature and adult Glaucous-winged
Gulls appeared at both waterfront sites.

Last week was much quieter, but we heard and then saw locally uncommon
Ash-throated Flycatcher and White-breasted Nuthatch in Tilden.
