Dear Birders:
Yesterday when I was reading in my garden, something caught my
attention. I looked up to see two intertwined birds tumbling down to
just above where I sat. Not fifty feet from the ground the birds
separated, swerved off in opposite directions uttering a shrill cascade
of ecstatic twittering. Though I almost doubted what I had seen, from
their black sickle-shaped wings I believe they were White-throated
Swifts. I may have witnessed a nuptial ritual -- a daring kind of
foreplay or maybe even the act of consummation itself. In my almost 75
years of birdwatching, I have never seen such a thing and it would be
unreasonable to expect to witness this extraordinary display again.
