[EBB Sightings] Cassin's Vireo, Golden Eagle, & Other Species: Mitchell Canyon, Mt. Diablo St. Park

Mt. Diablo St. Park?s Mitchell Canyon area, Clayton, CA 4/20/08

Gratifying to report my spirited group of Merritt College students (?Bird Song Ecology? class) enjoyed seeing the following species today....

(i.e., Note: none are vagrants/accidentals and/or casual visitors, but all qualify for reporting in terms of local interest and seasonal/phenological angles):

- GOLDEN EAGLE (subadult, 1, at Clayton entrance area, mobbed by a (brave) Tree Swallow)

- CASSIN?S VIREO (5, both heard and/or seen)

- MACGILLIVRAY?S WARBLER (5, seen and heard singing)

- RUFOUS HUMMINGBIRD (2 males seen)

- ASH-THROATED FLYCATCHER (7 heard, 2 of which were seen)

- ORANGE-CROWNED WARBLER (5 heard, both singing AND calling ?2 of 5 seen)

- AUDUBON?s YELLOW-RUMPED WARBLER (many heard singing, with one individual seen singing and 

- COOPER?S HAWK (2 seen)

Also worth noting:

- WARBLING VIREO (12 heard, 1 seen)

- HOUSE WREN (4 heard, 1 seen, including nest building and/or entering cavity nest)

- BUSHTIT (many seen and heard, including one entering and leaving active nest)
