    Hi E. B. Birders,

This morning I took a hike from Valle Vista Staging
Area in Moraga, along the Redwood Trail towards
Canyon. (EBMUD permit needed). I heard Pileated
Woodpecker calling, drumming, and tapping from the
oak covered hillside above me, but it was too densely
vegetated to see the bird. I was directly under the
electrical transmission wires on the south side of
    Canyon Road.

I continued about a half mile along this trail until
it ended at the intersection of Canyon Road and
Pinehurst Road, where I finally saw a male Pileated
Woodpecker perched on the Eucalyptus snag directly
above the stop sign. I watched it for about 10
minutes, calling, drumming and eventually flying off
    towards Canyon.

Also, I heard a Swainson's Thrush liquid "whit" call
note repeatedly from the deeply wooded near area near
the small bridge along this trail.

    All the Best Birding,
    Denise Wight
