This morning, just before midday, Shirley Ellis and I were sitting near the
footbridge at the north end of Heather Farm Park in Walnut Creek. I had
seen a crow sitting on the bare top of a pine tree next to our homeowner's
association swimming pool. When I looked later, it looked as though
something white was sitting up there. Sure enough, it was a White-tailed
Kite. Darn, it was less than 100 yards from the park. Still, this is south
of Treat Boulevard and west of Bancroft.

They have been seen in the past along Shell Ridge, as well as west of John
Muir Hospital and south of Ygnacio Valley Road.

Though I missed it, Shirley told me that she had a Townsend's Warbler near
the bottom of the big hill in the park. I had told her about the two Snipes
in the ditch near the footbridge, but of course, by the time we were there,
the birds were not. The Kite more than made up for their absence.
