On March 12, I stepped out onto our back patio to find a beautiful dead bird
on the ground below our glass door. I identified it as a male Red-naped
Sapsucker, the first such sapsucker I have ever seen. This would be one for the
Alameda County bird list. The bird looks just like the male depicted in the Sibley
Guide to Birds, including the red nape, all red throat and white markings in
two rows down its back. NOTE: Our picture windows now have screens to avoid
bird strikes (works well) but now we will have to create a screen for the door.
