I paid my first visit to Hayward Shoreline, Winton Ave, this morning. I
was hoping to photograph that Lapland Longspur. I spent an hour and half
poking around on both sides of the outflow channel, saw lots of
meadowlarks, pipits, Horned Larks, and Savannahs, and got a couple of good
pictures of Horned Larks -- the males were singing, and they were allowing
close approach -- and one of a perched Northern Harrier. But no longspur,
and I was about to leave when Bob Richmond arrived and generously gave me
a Longspur-finding lesson. With his guidance, I got a couple of distant
views of the bird, but alas, no photo, as it was in the low shrubbery
rather than out in the open. Bob says it sometimes can be found in the
short grass, from the path, and at fairly close range -- so I will try
    again.
