    Dear Birders,
I hate to say it, but the bird I reported on Dec. 15 as a Prairie Falcon was more likely a Merlin. I didn't keep my notes, so I can't be sure, but since I didn't even consider Merlin at the time, I may well have jumped to conclusions.
As pictured in Sibley, the juvenile PRFA and adult female Taiga Merlin have some similarities. But even aside from the difference in leg color, the tail patterns are very different, as is the color of the back. I saw the bird in flight and thought I saw the dark axillaries and coverts of the PRFA but the light was low and I may have been mistaken.
Pretty embarrassing, but I wanted to set the record straight!
