This morning around 4:45AM I opened the car door to hear Great-horned Owl
calling consistently. I played Western-screech Owl and immediately heard a
reply. Within a few minutes the WESO was calling every few moments and
getting closer. Soon the WESO was directly across the road in the riparian,
I found the WESO sitting on bare branch about 20 feet away. The bird was
still calling as I drove away. No luck with Northern Pygmy Owl. Even more
unusual was hearing Greater-white Fronted Geese flying overhead in the
    darkness.

I was just beyond the white concrete bridge south of Veterans Park in
Livermore. Veterans Park is located on Arroyo Rd south of Livermore.
    Good birding.
