    Birders:

Today, January 3rd, my husband and I saw the male Lapland Longspur in
with the small flock of Horned Larks at the section of the Hayward
Regional Shoreline Park accessed via Winton Ave. The flock was observed
along the Bay Trail, around noon, just north of the bridge, on the green
hill east of the trail, only about 10-20 yards from the trail. To get
to this section take the east trail along the slough from the first
parking area (across from the park office) and walk all the way to the
Bay. Then turn right (north) and listen for the Horned Larks. Further
north on this trail are the White-fronted Geese, Ross's Geese, Snow
Geese, and Canada Geese. In the Bay we saw one lone Ruddy Turnstone
perched on a rock about 200 yards out from all the Dunlin, Least and
Western Sandpipers feeding as the high tide began to subside. Mixed in
were a few Long-billed Curlews, two Marbled Godwits and many Willets.

We did not see the Tropical Kingbird today.
