I just returned from a scouting trip for Sunday's Oakland CBC. On the
Loop Road just west of the Sylvan Trail crossing, I found an adult
male sapsucker, either a Red-naped or Yellow-bellied. During the 10
minutes I was there, I had only a fleeting look at the back of the
head, and it appeared mostly dark (no extensive area of white), though
I did not see any red. The barring on the back was split by a mostly
dark area from nape to mid-back, so that the barred area had a roughly
V shape. The red on the throat was extensive and I do not recall it
being bordered on the sides by black -- but I did not know enough to
look for this distinction between the species! Mea culpa.

I hope this bird can be refound. It was working a eucalyptus branch
on the north side of the Loop Road.
