As part of oil spill response today, I ran into two interesting birds:

1. apparent Hooded Merganser x Goldeneye hybrid at Lake Merritt in
Oakland (a bird discussed last year?)

2. Eurasian Wigeon drake in pond at end of Oakland Airport runway on
Bayfarm Island.

Also, Clapper Rails were quite vocal in San Leandro Bay.

I realize these are in Alameda County, but I'm not sure which listserv
is best for these.

With regard to spill response, full bird search & collection continues
on the outer coast and in the bay.  I can report complete species
numbers in a few days.  There were 6 oiled Greater Scaup in Lake
Merritt, which we believe were oiled in the bay and then flew into the
lake.  None of the resident birds appeared oiled.  The scaup were not
capturable today, but they may try with spotlights at night, when it
is easier to catch them.
