This afternoon on Alameda Creek just downstream from
the Niles staging area: three red-headed COMMON
MERGANSERS sleeping on the rocks mid-stream with heads
tucked under wings. From Niles Community Park: four
male BUFFLEHEAD on the water and two AMERICAN WHITE
PELICANS flying low over the water. A friend had seen
a male HOODED MERGANSER here on 10/29, but I did not
see that bird today. On the Quarry Lake nearest to the
Isherwood staging area: 10 male SCAUP, most with
peaked heads, a couple with rounder heads, all heads
looked brown (some had a greenish sheen); I couldn't
see a size difference from bird to bird. They looked
like lessers to me, maybe with a couple of greaters in
    the mix.
