    Birders:

At 3:45 this afternoon, as I drove south on College Avenue past
Berkeley's Elmwood branch post office, I spotted a duck in the middle
of the street a block ahead of me. I slowed, and saw if fly a short
distance and then land in Woolsey Street, just a few feet east of
College. My route took me up Woolsey, so I was able to slow, and then
stop, lower my window, and admire this female White-winged Scoter in
the middle of the street, just a few feet away from my car. When I
retraced my path 45 minutes later it was gone.

Years ago I lived about a half-mile away, closer to the Claremont
Hotel. There my yard list included a Wilson's Snipe and a male Wood
Duck, both of which landed in my yard. Now I wonder which inhabitants
of the College Avenue Oakland-Berkeley borderline neighborhood now have
White-winged Scoter on their yard list.
