This Sunday morning between 9:45 and 11:00, I continuously watched
the Parasitic Jaeger at the very end of the Berkeley Pier. When I
first arrived, the jaeger was chasing a gull at the very end of the
fishing pier. During the last hour I was at the pier (and joined by
fellow birder Dan Sidle), the jaeger was 1/2 to 1 mile away--usually
in flight over the old abandoned pier or slowly swimming to the south
of the old pier. The jaeger spent about 80 % of the time floating on
the ocean and having a scope greatly aided in identifying the jaeger
when the bird was at rest in the ocean. When the jaeger was chasing
other gulls and terns for their meal, identification was a cinch at
distance, even with binoculars. When the jaeger was in flight, it was
typically flying in the vicinity of the old pier. It's an interesting
bird to watch when it is in flight. There were a lot of other birds
on the old pier including some Elegant Terns.

On the way back, Dan and I stopped at the inlet just south of
University Ave. and we both spotted the Brant near the northwest
corner of the inlet. The white necklace on the Brant was wider than
on most Brandts and the necklace width was constant--not tapering to
the rear of the neck. The necklace also lacked the black diagonal
stripes which is typical of the Brandt's I've seen.
