Being near Don Edwards, Newark, this morning during
the lull in the rain, I took a quick run to the pond
to see if I could refind the Stilted Sandpiper. As I
walked the side of the road TWO Stilted Sandpipers
flushed from the north edge of the pond from behind
some clumps of pickleweed. They flew westward toward
the salt ponds, going nearly overhead. Got great looks
at them, including the white rumps and they both
vocalized as they flew, giving their drawn out
Godwit-like call.
I, too, was warned Tuesday about stopping on the side
of the road in the bike lane by a Newark traffic
control officer. He informed me the fine was $250! So,
today I parked in the private lot near the entrance
for a few minutes to walk the road. That seems to
spook the Stilteds so the best bet would be to scope
them from near the gate. (I just didn't have my scope
w/ me.) :(
