    Having been quite close to "dive-pops" on a number of occasions, I have 
    often wondered if the sound -- or part of it -- is being "squeezed out" 
    of the bird by the pressure at the end of the dive, rather like a 
    mini-"sonic boom," or the crack of a whip.
