Summer started off nicely despite some rather cold weather from Monday
through Wednesday. On Tuesday, we found a male Bufflehead east of the Albany Bulb,
along with an unusually high number of Clark's Grebes and the usual handful
of Least Terns. On Wednesday, we found a swarm of House Wrens along the Big
Springs Trail in Tilden, with at least thirteen individuals seen or heard in
that relatively short stretch. Thursday brought us more large grebes of both
species at the Berkeley Marina, as well as a Pelagic Cormorant, an Osprey, and
three Pigeon Guillemots near the pier, a species I don't recall ever seeing
from the East Bay shore before. A non-avian highlight was a sighting of two
Bat Rays in the Aquatic Park Lagoon, clearly viewed from above on the freeway
pedestrian bridge. Today was family day, as we spotted a female quail with at
least twelve good sized chicks, and also a female turkey with eight or more
chicks, both seen along the flanks of Vollmer Peak. We also had looks at the
sortying Olive-sided Flycathcer mentioned by Laura, and we discovered a locally
rare Blue-gray Gnatcatcher on the western side of the peak.
