Over the past few evenings I've been hearing some high-pitched hummingbird
notes that I thought were Costa's, but hadn't been able to see the little
dear. Yesterday evening I got a good look and was able to confirm an
adult male Costa's Hummingbird in my back yard here in Livermore. After a
couple of unseen display flights (marked by a distinctive, long, rising
and then falling "zweeeeEEEEEeeeee" call), he came in to diplay in front
of a female plumaged bird I think was one of our Anna's (I confess I
wasn't paying much attention to her). He swang around in a horizontal
semi-circle, flaring out his gorget in front of him while he twittered.
    It was impressive to see.

This is the fourth year in 14 that we've had Costa's in the yard. An adult
male (I'm assuming the same individual) spent the summers of 2001 and 2002
here, and last fall we had an imm. male for about a month.

    good birding
