Took a quick and incredibly windy walk up from Pt Isabella at 6 pm Monday. Just below the black plastic fencing at the restoration site (which is, in turn, below where the burrowing owl nested), I saw the bird. I had red knots on the brain but was instantly struck by the solid brick red-orange-red color. Then it lifted its windblown head and I saw the large, solid white eye patch extending to the back of the head. It was gone half an hour later and my husband looked for it today but had no luck.

I assume these aren't too common, though my old Birds of Northern California indicates that in some years we have large numbers. I also saw the Hayward listing for Sunday.
