Thursday, April 12-GGAS Alcatraz Island trip
The trip was made especially interesting by ranger-biologist Christian
Hellwig. We saw a small but very interesting number of birds. The
Brandt?s Cormorants were already on eggs, and the Western Gulls were
mating and staking out their nesting sites. Snowy Egrets were on nests
in the bushes. Pigeon Guillemots and a Red-necked Grebe were seen in
the water. (The Pigeon Guillemots nest in the cliff face.) The resident
Raven pair was seen, and House Finches and Song Sparrows were singing.
A few Canada Geese and Mallards were also trying to nest, but their
success is minimal because of the lack of fresh water on the island and
the ever-present Western Gulls. 15 species seen:
    Red-necked Grebe
    Western Grebe
    Double-crested Cormorant
    Brandt's Cormorant
    Snowy Egret
    Canada Goose
    Mallard
    Western Gull
    Pigeon Guillemot
    Rock Pigeon
    Common Raven
    European Starling
    Song Sparrow
    Golden-crowned Sparrow
    House Finch
