Down near the Lakeshore end of Lake Merritt this afternoon, I saw an 
Eared Grebe in full breeding plumage: beaten copper and steel gray, with 
bright gold ear fans. That's gotta be one of the most gorgeous birds of 
the area... or maybe of the whole temperate zone....
