I was in Niles this morning for business & had an hour to stop & bird. The Mission Adobe Garden Center looked promising, so I stopped in & drove to the back near the old Mission (The entrance is directly across from Nursery Ave if you come off Mission Blvd.) I walked thru the back of the property, finding it quite birdy. In an hour I saw 4 HOODED ORIOLES, 2 PACIFIC-SLOPE FLYCATCHERS, at least 8 BEWICK'S WRENS. The highlite of the hour, tho', was finding a small flock of TOWNSEND'S WARBLERS at the very back in one of the Oak looking trees (I'm plant ignorant) that have some HUGE redwood planters built around the trunks. (They're 5 feet tall by about 10 feet square.) In the flock of Townsend's was 1 HERMIT WARBLER! This was a life bird for me. The clean, unmarked underparts was what first caught my eye. Then, it looked down & I saw the unmarked, bright yellow face, black throat & some specks of black along the center of the crown, moving to solid dark gray/blackish on the
nape. Lovely bird. Great habitats for all sorts of birds there at Mission Adobe.
