    Dear Birders:

On this first official day of Spring and following yesterday's
refreshing rain, I visited Jewel Lake soon after sunup. A few Varied
Thrush remain. Among the singers -- a Brown Creeper whose high wispy
song tests one's hearing, a newly-arrived Warbling Vireo, and the star
of the morning a Winter Wren who rolled out its endless trills from a
perch maybe ten feet above the ground in clear view. If indeed this is
his proclaimed territory, then you will find him in concert at the
southwest corner of the lake opposite the alders

Though the Common Merganser pair and the several Ring-necked Ducks were
not present, four bufflehead -- two males and two females remain and
probably will stay for another couple of weeks.
