    Contra Costa County:

Two different groups were treated to great views of a juvenile ferruginous hawk on Saturday, March 10. Albany Adult School Bird Song class hiked up the Old Briones Rd. and began seeing the bird soon after entering the pasture area around 9:30 AM heading for the ridgeline trail (Crest Trail). It spent most of its time wheeling over the Bear Valley area and should have been visible from there as well. At the crest of the trail, we looked both up at and down on the hawk.

East Bay Regional Parks naturalist-led walk to the same ridge to look in bluebird boxes in the afternoon also had good views around 3:30 PM. The bird (presumably the same one) first appeared in binocular views as we were looking at a pair of western bluebirds perched on the fence and the hawk flew by behind them. Quite a wonderful shock!

      Good birding,
