    Hi EB Birders,

I beg your indulgence for this out-of-area post, but as many GGAS members are
in the East Bay, I wanted to post an announcement about a San Francisco birding
event being sponsored by Golden Gate Audubon for this coming April, and
encourage people to register early if possible. The event is a friendly
national competition to see which cities and counties have the best bird
diversity as measured by the total species count over a 72-hour period. You can
sign up for one or more half or full days, as you prefer. San Francisco will
enter in the "Small Coastal City" category, which last year was won by Dauphin
Island, AL with 170 species. With enough participants, a few new or lingering
rarities and luck with the weather, we may be able to approach this number here
in SF. California counties (Monterey and San Diego) have won the county
    competition in years past.

I will be coordinating the count and the fielding of teams. Feel free to
contact me via email with any questions. A brief description of the event as
well as registration information are below.

Hope to see you in April --

    America?s Birdiest City Competition
    San Francisco
    Friday?Monday, April 13?16

Birders of all skill levels are invited to sign up for San Francisco?s entry in
America?s Birdiest City/County Competition, a contest where participants try to
document the most species possible in a 72-hour period in cities and counties
across the country. Participants will be assigned specific areas to cover in
the time slot(s) for which they register. There is no charge to take part in
the event. You can join us for one or more four-hour count periods by signing
    up online at http://goldengateaudubon.org/html/forms/birdiest_city_form.htm .
Or you can call the Golden Gate Audubon office at 510.843.2222 to register by
phone. This should be an exciting event with the potential for viewing a wide
variety of resident, overwintering, and migrating birds all within San
    Francisco city limits.
