Steve & I hit several East Bay spots today (Thurs, Dec 28) to see if the
winds had blown in anything interesting. The short answer is it was still
too windy to tell. The wind made bayside birding rough, with watering eyes
and one hand holding my hat in place. Highlights were:

Miller-Knox Regional Shoreline - The regular Spotted Sandpiper was holding
down the rocks at Ferry Point.

Albany bulb - The low tide had pushed most of the ducks far out, but we
picked up both EURASIAN WIGEONS at 2 locations seen from the bluffs.

Oakland - We did NOT see the Palm Warbler at Fairyland. I would be
interested in hearing of any sightings since the storms.

We tracked down the hooded goldeneye (apparent Hooded Merganser X Barrow's
Goldeneye hybrid) in Lake Merritt's outlet channel just below where 10th St
crosses the channel. He looked the same as he did when we saw him 2 years
ago -- felt like visiting an old friend. There is street parking on 10th
where it crosses the channel and a "nature trail" along the south side of
the channel offering great viewing. A REDHEAD was also seen at this
location. There were at least 2 female BARROW'S GOLDENEYES, but no males.

    Good birding,
