This afternoon, Steve Huckabone, Jim Lomax, I, and two other birders went
looking for the male Tufted Duck on Clifton Court Forebay in Eastern Contra
Costa County from about 1:00 PM or so. We headed out clock-wide around the
forebay checking out all the scaup. Jim Lomax pointed out a flying
Red-breasted Mergansers which Steve also saw and which I did not see.

Later Steve and I, after Jim Lomax and the other two birders had departed,
headed back toward the parking lot in anticipation of the coming storm. We
decided to check out the ducks in the slough off the forebay's inlet where
fishermen tend to hang out. At 3:10 PM I scanned my binoculars across the
flock to the south-west and asked Steve to aim his scope on the one
black-backed duck in the direction of the metal-roof shed some distance
away. Sure enough it was the male Tufted Duck.
