    Birders,
On Sunday I participated in the Hayward Bird count and covered the Niles Canyon/ Quarry Lakes Park section that I always do. We had 6 people and split into 3 parties at times. There were great highlights in the 98 species we saw including courtship display of 2 Peregrine Falcons, scores and scores of Varied Thrush, a Hairy Woodpecker on Palomares Rd. along with at least a dozen Acorn Woodpecker there. The Hayward count only occasionally gets Acorns and usually 1-3 birds. Our first Quail was seen on Palomares Rd. Rich Cimino called "Quail" and just as he said it a Coppers hawk took the bird and flew off, very exciting stuff.
