San Leandro to Hayward on the SF Bay Trail Bicycle Trip
    Sunday, December 17, 2006
    Trip Report
Having been foiled by the weather last weekend, six of us ventured out
on this beautiful day and were rewarded with 64 species. High tide was
at about 9:30 when we started, and that forced the shorebirds into the
ponds; on our return the tide was receding and the shorebirds were
feeding in the newly exposed mud on the bay shore. We started from San
Leandro Marina Park and went to the Hayward Shoreline Interpretive
Center and then over the bicycle/pedestrian bridge to see what we could
see on the south side of Highway 92. Clapper Rails and Sora were seen
about 1/4 mile south of the golf course. A Say?s Phoebe was seen at the
pond north of the sewer treatment plant near the Grant Ave. access. A
Eurasian Wigeon was seen in the bay amongst the American Wigeons near
the bridge over Sulphur Creek (about half-way between the Grant Ave.
and West Winton access points). On the mesa/landfill just west of the
Winton Ave access we saw Western Meadowlarks, Horned Larks and a
Northern Harrier. Ducks were everywhere, and we also glimpsed a
White-tailed kite, a kestrel and a couple of Red-tailed Hawks. We saw
that the extension of the Bay Trail south of Highway 92 is in progress
and found a lot of Yellow-rumped Warblers in the trees in the business
park area near Eden Landing Road. Between the Interpretive Center and
the overpass dowitchers and yellowlegs were feeding by the side of the
narrow channel next to Breakwater Ave. We ate our lunch at the Hayward
Shoreline Interpretive Center and shared baked treats. In the center
(open Sat. and Sun.) is a display of fabric art of wildlife. 28 miles
    and a great day.
