    Dear Birders:

I can now add my voice to Doug Greenberg's "my White-throated Sparrow is back." I saw the first
one of the season for me this morning feeding on my deck (near LHS in the Berkeley Hills) with
golden-crowns and juncos. It appears that "my bird" is a tan-striped juvenile. For interesting
differences in the behavior of the tan-striped and white-striped morphs read Kenn Kaufman's "Lives
    of North American Birds."

It seems that White-throated Sparrows are no longer unusual winter birds for our region. Or maybe
there are simply more of us noticing.

Debbie Brusco writes about the "spiraling" soft song of the Hermit Thrush. I hear that same sotto
voce song each spring before the bird departs, as if its practicing for the full-throated arias
that bring such eloguence to the High Sierra canyons.

About Cedar Waxwings: I, too, have been seeing and hearing small flocks for several weeks but not
yet in the astonishing numbers reported last year.

Turkeys continue to come and go in my neighborhood suprising those not used to seeing them.
    Recipes, anyone? (just kidding)
