Debbie, Thank you for the description of the "chup" call. We have had a
Hermit Thrush in our yard for since Nov. 5. It's about to completely
strip our two toyons of the red berries. I have heard the call several
times and finally saw the hermit thrush while it was calling. So now I
should remember I hope. The only other bird of interest wintering in
our yard is a ruby crowned kinglet. We also have a smattering of
gold-crowned sparrows and one or two white-crowned. No white-throated
yet this year, although it seems to be a busy year for white-throated
sparrows. We live in northwest Walnut Creek, west of Hwy 680, south of
Larkey Park.

Late today, I was in the back yard with a friend when
we heard a faint spirally song. There was a bird on
the back fence which turned out to be a Hermit Thrush,
performing a whisper song! After a minute it flew down
to the side of us into some foliage. It gave a few
"chup" calls from there.
