With a chance to spend some observation time in the area of Meeker Slough
today, I found the earlier-reported brant South of the restored Stege Marsh
and the Bay trail near the dilapidated trestle/pier structure. A belted
kingfisher (actually a queenfisher) was using the trestle for a hunting
perch and they Bay edge and the marsh held a good number of sandpipers from
least to long-billed curlew, and plovers from semipalmated to
black-bellied. Brown pelicans were fishing in the slough mouth in shallow
water, looking like giant water skiis and throwing up a large cloud of
spray in the process. Mallards and green-winged teal were in the slough.
