GGAS Bicycle Birding Trip Report - Saturday, September 16, 2006
East Shore State Park and Aquatic Park
Emeryville to Richmond on the SF Bay Trail

Starting at Aquatic Park in Berkeley at 8 a.m., 14 of us had wonderful
weather and wonderful birding for the 23 miles of the trip. Some of the
highlights of the day were the Black Turnstones and Sanderlings
foraging at high tide on the shoreline between Powell St. and
University Avenue, and the Eurasian Wigeon amongst the American Wigeons
in the bay near the viewing platforms on Buchanan west of I-580 in
Albany. We also had lots of Black-bellied Plovers, Yellowlegs and
Semipalmated Plovers. At high tide there are lots of birds that
congregate on the rocks adjacent to Powell St. about half-way out to
the end of the peninsula west from I-80, and there is a small marsh
habitat just at the corner of Powell St. and the entrance to I-80 West.
And thank you to the many people involved in the S.F. Bay Trail
Cleanup! There were an amazing number of bags of trash accumulated by
these volunteers. 60 species seen.
