Thank you for your message! I didn't know that they were so rare; I'm not
that knowledgeable a birder. But we did eliminate the black-bellied because
we saw golden and because we saw a cap. However, as I said, we were at a
distance and the light could have been playing tricks on us. It wouldn't be the
first time. I'll have to scratch Pacific golden-plover from the list for
now; the evidence is clearly weighted against!

Jennifer, it would be super rare to have 10. One is a big deal. I am not an
expert, but check Sibley carefully. Their shape and head are different,
finer, than BBellieds. My guess is that most plovers are still in alternate
plumage right now, molting into basic/winter?and the pacifics are definitely more
golden than the BB. Separating out pacific from American, which we do not seem
to be here much, is super hard!! I have seen experts stumped even with very
    close views and good photos.
Good luck! I had an expert with me when I saw one to explain the differences
    and we had a scope.

On Wednesday mid-morning (July 26), my husband and I saw about 10-12
golden-plovers off shore at low tide, hanging out with gulls and avocets. It was
hard to get fine detail with our binoculars, but we identified them as Pacific
because some of them had so little black on them, as Sibley shows the
    females do.

    Hi, all.
Has anyone seen the Pacific golden plover since it
was spotted last Sunday near Franks Dump in Hayward.
Since no one has reported on it since then, I'm
assuming not, but if it is still around, I'd like to
get down to try to see it.
    Thanks,
