We ran into a swarm of Hermits today all around the top of Vollmer Peak in
South Tilden. If it was merely the same group following us, then there may
have been as few as four individuals, but as we found them on the north, east,
and south sides of the peak, in various pine groves, I suspect that there were
ten or even more birds, both adults and juveniles. In two of the groves, they
were associating with different constellations of nuthatches, wrens,
chickadees and Hutton's Vireos in quite intense feeding flocks. The first returning
Flicker of the season was up there as well.
