Dear EBBers - I was glad to see so much interesting discussion generated
from my Coliseum sightings. I did make a count of the birds I saw before
the game on friday night, and entered them on eBird. I think it would be
interesting, over the years, to know what birds frequent the stadium. For
instance, how do the numbers of gulls change over the season? I had a Black
Phoebe there on Friday - are they regular or accidental for this 'habitat'?
Do more birds of prey attend Raider games from a sense of spiritual
sympatico with the fans? Since I live a distance, and am not made of money,
I cannot attend as many games as I might want to. So I am suggesting that
if lots of people enter their stadium data on eBird, we might learn
something interesting. In any case, given the nearly annual sighting of
Ashy Storm-Petrel in SF stadia, and the presence of upwards of 18-20 species
at the Oakland Coliseum on any given night, it would be interesting to move
stadium sightings past the anecdotal and into the data-factual!

Of course, if that's true for an already, shall we say, compromised habitat
like the Coliseum, it would hold true for other habitats, too! I find that
eBird is improving my birding skills, by making me much more attentive to
numbers and behaviors. For those of you who haven't visited it yet:

For me, personally, I find it much more useful as a contribution to
knowledge - the ultimate birding data base - than as a place to maintain my
own lists. But eBird can serve both functions.

On a strictly East Bay birding point, which are Contra Costa's best
locations for fall migration of passerines? It's time for me to work on
that county list a bit. thanks -
