[EBB Sightings] PILEATED WOODPECKER

On May 14, 2006 a PIWO was observed flicking bark from a bay tree snag
about 9:30 a.m.  This was along the Tres Sendas Trail in Redwood
Regional Park at a location where the bird was seen in 2003.   I've
checked this location since May 14 but have not seen the bird again.

To try to relocate this bird, enter Redwood Regional Park at Moon Gate,
on Skyline Boulevard in Oakland just north of the Skyline/Castle Drive
intersection.  Turn north (left) on the West Ridge Trail and shortly
thereafter downhill onto the Tres Sendas Trail.  The bird was seen
opposite where rip rap and wooden steps have been placed along the
stream bed, soon after the trail leaves the open grassland and enters
the oak/bay woodland habitat.
